The Shantak - H.P. Lovecraft by tdman45 The Shantak - H.P. Lovecraft by tdman45
My submission for an art illustration competition. A combination of 3D modelling/rendering and 2d painting.

The creature is a Shantak from H.P Lovecraft's Dream-quest of Unknown Kadath. Below is the excerpt I designed it from:

They were not any birds or bats known elsewhere on earth or in dreamland, for they were larger than elephants and had heads like a horse's. Carter knew that they must be the shantak-birds of ill rumour, and wondered no more what evil guardians and nameless sentinels made men avoid the boreal rock desert.

Fantastic work mate. Really good job with the rendering - I really thought this was a painting first off (even though I'd seen the original sculpture). I'd have gone for a landscape aspect composition to fully show of the wingspan close up though.

Thanks mate! Yeah the choice of portrait over landscape was a tough one. I read the brief and thought having a closer crop of the creature was necessary. For starters, the wings were a bit large, and detracted focus from the main character. But mostly, I think this way gives a better sense of drama... :D
